PIGS
Sows improving slightly this week, hopefully a sign of things to come in the coming weeks, Heavy gilts stood very strong this week, with only a few forward and all being over 200kg, which does knock demand somewhat. A pen of over-weight gilts from C F Buckton & Son, Rise looking well sold at just shy of £210 per head, selling to Propa Meats, Roos.

Cull Sows to 51.8p/kg and £160.65, average 48.9p/kg.

SHEEP
Another good show of sheep this week, trade back slightly on last week and a fortnight ago, but this was not unexpected after looking at results from across the country towards the back end of last week. Ewes still looking strong and demand expected to increase over the next few weeks with Eid just around the corner, any tup hoggs still lurking around will also probably be best sold before the festival at the end of March as well.

CATTLE
Cattle just continue to get stronger and stronger, the first big show of bulls we’ve seen for a long time and they certainly didn’t disappoint, topping at £1,940 for a tremendous short keep bull from Turner Bros, East Halton. Plenty of older stores and a good number of cows forward this week, with plenty of buyers round the ring for these types of cattle, but always good to know they’re coming so we can ensure the demand is there. Younger sorts look well sold as well, especially those in the calf ring, with Messrs Foreman of Brigham being the main vendors today and the trade running away with them, selling to £700 for Blue bulls and averaging £610 across a superb run of continental calves, being mainly heifers.
